
Dr. Rameshori Yumnam of the Department of Zoology receiving
the Young Scientist Award.
- IMPHAL — The
National Academy of Environmental Sciences, Haridwar, conferred its Young
Scientist Award on assistant professor Dr. Rameshori Yumnam of the Department
of Zoology, Manipur University.
- The award was presented to Dr. Rameshori by Chancellor Dr.
Satya Pal Singh of Gurukul Kangri University, Haridwar, and former Union
Minister of State (Human Resource Development), during an international seminar
held under the aegis of the Indian Academy of Environmental Sciences, Haridwar,
and the Department of Zoology and Environmental Science, GKSVV Haridwar, on
January 28 and 29.
- A trained freshwater ichthyologist, Dr. Rameshori has been
working in various fields related to freshwater fisheries of the Eastern
Himalayas for the past decade.
- Her research activities encompass the areas of freshwater
ichthyology, integrative taxonomy, and systematic aquatic biodiversity
exploration in the region, while also delving into the threats and
opportunities in freshwater biodiversity. In recent years, she has also worked
on innovations for climate change, conservation, and sustainable aquaculture in
northeast India and the adjoining areas.
- With research interests in DNA barcoding, integrative
systematics, and molecular taxonomy, Dr. Rameshori focuses her scientific study
on the inventory of fish diversity in northeast India. Another key focus of her
work is the enhancement of livelihoods through sustainable aquaculture.
- Some of her published scientific works include 'Fish
Germplasm of Northeast India', 'Microbiome in Aquaponics: Emergent Roles and
Potential Applications', 'Benthic Microbial Community in the Aquatic
Environment', 'Handbook of Aquatic Microbiology', 'Overview of Microbial Toxins
in the Aquatic Environment', 'Microbiome in Aquaponics', 'A Manual on the
Identification of Fishes of the Eastern Himalayas', and 'Freshwater Fish
Taxonomy and a Manual for the Identification of Fishes of Northeast India'.
- She currently leads the Freshwater Ichthyology and
Sustainable Aquaculture Laboratory (FISA-Lab), which is involved in several
projects related to the biodiversity of the region.
