Dimapur/Agartal July 26 (EMN/IANS): Manipur and Tripura on Friday paid tributes to the Kargil War martyrs at the Banquet Hall of the 1st Manipur Rifles battalion in Imphal and the Albert Ekka Memorial at Lichu Bagan respectively.
Speaking on the occasion, Manipur Agriculture Minister V Hangkhalian recalled the courage of the Indian Armies while fighting the enemies at Kargil.
“Such supreme sacrifices cannot not be forgotten and feel proud for the selfless sacrifices and courage of our soldiers who fought valiantly for the country,” he said.
Environment Minister Thounaojam Shyamkumar said, “We remember our martyrs, by revisiting the sacrifices and instilling pride and respect among us.”
He appealed to the people of the state to fight collectively against terrorism and other external forces in the country.
In Tripura, Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb after laying a wreath at the martyrs' memorial said, "Thousands of soldiers of Army and other para-military forces have sacrificed their lives to protect our motherland."
Meanwhile, the Sentinels of the North East, Assam Rifles paid homage to the martyrs of Operation Vijay by laying wreaths on Friday at the Assam Rifles War Memorial at its HQ Laitkor, Shillong.
In a sombre wreath laying ceremony, held as per military customs, Additional Director General Assam Rifles Major General Balwinder Singh, VS Mand and the all ranks of the troops remembered the ultimate sacrifice of the officers and men of the Indian Army who sacrificed their live for the nation, an update from AR official said.
Similar, all the Assam Rifles units across the north-eastern states held a wreath laying ceremony.
The Border Security Force (BSF) is conducting a series of events to commemorate the valour and sacrifice of the Indian Army during the Kargil war.
A BSF release said that the Chief Minister would flag-off the "Run for Martyrs (mini marathon) here on Saturday. BSF official Arun Kumar Verma told IANS, "At least 2,000 people from various para-military forces and civilians will take part in the "Run for Martyrs."
The BSF release said that during the week-long celebrations since July 20, banners were displayed with photographs and brief details of the Kargil war heroes at all prominent places and locations.
Various other programmes were also held including screening of movies and documentaries on the Kargil war at selected town halls, Panchayat Bhavans and community halls.
"Blood donation and medical camps are being organised by BSF in hospitals. Drawing, painting, debates, patriotic song competitions are also being organised for students. Families of the martyrs and gallantry awardees from all uniformed forces residing in bordering areas are being felicitated," the release added.
