IMPHAL, July 5: In a move to have intact forest cover at the catchment areas of major rivers in Manipur, the forest department in association with a German agency is all set to launch
community based catchment conservation projects in the border state.
This was conveyed by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest PN Prasad addressing a press conference organized by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations here on Tuesday.
“The proposed project will be taken up as part of the upcoming added or assistance natural regeneration, in association with German based (Banking group) - KFW for the development of the catchments of Imphal, Thoubal and Singda rivers,” says Chief Conservator of Forest Prasad. “The objective is to conserve forest for better water resources.”
Stating that the forest cover of Manipur (77 percent of state area) is on the rise as per Forest Survey of India reports, Prasad, said the department is also trying to tackle the jhum cultivation by introducing new steps which include rehabilitation of jhumias etc.
