IMPHAL, April 16 (EMN): In a move to formulate a proper system for solid waste management, necessary steps will be taken up soon in consultation with the concerned stake holders in Manipur.
Disclosing this Manipur assembly speaker Yumnam Khemchand while flagging off a cycle rally on Sunday said, “We’ll be holding a seminar to bring out a white paper on solid waste management as part of the upcoming smart city programs.”
The cycle rally was organised for the fourth consecutive years as part river bank music festival under the aegis of Rivers and Environment Protection Society and Leipungwa Entertainment, an event management group.
Imphal town which generates more than 120 metric tones of solid waste on a daily basis and is projected to rise about 170 tones by 2030 is facing an uphill task to solve the issue of unavailability of landfill or dumping sites of the solid waste as only about 50 percent of the waste is collected while rest of it remains uncollected and dumped in the open places creating nuisance and unhygienic condictions.
Currently Imphal Municipal Council (IMC) has been engaging couple of NGOs in and around the 27 wards of IMC for the collection and disposal of the soli waste management.

In another development, necessary steps are on for the acquisition of land for construction of 111km Imphal-Kangchup-Tamenglong road by organising five days public hearing in the state under the aegis of Social Impact Assessment Unit of government of Manipur and directorate of environment at Samushang community hall.The last public hearing which was attended by attended by Herojit Ngangomba, Corporator, Imphal municipality council ward number 27, BB Sharma, retired joint director (News) All India Radio and social activist, Muhammad Abdul Salam, retired settlement officer of revenue department, professor Y Mohendro Singh, renowned economist, Dr T Brajakumar Singh, deputy director, directorate of environment was held at shamushang near Imphal on Saturday.
More than 80 percent of affected 830 villages were covered during the public hearing and and most of the villagers agreed with the construction of roads with cooperation, according to T Brajakumar Singh.They also want proper compensation of their land and to complete the project as soon as possible.
