Imphal, Dec. 28 (EMN): TheManipur state transport department has directed all transport operators engaged in transport of school students and children in the northeastern state to comply with the conditions set by the transport department saying that failure to comply will result in necessary actions.
Issuing a government notification in this regard on Dec. 23, the Director (Transport) Manipur said that, “necessary actions will be taken as per the Motor Vehicle Act & Rules”.
It is said that almost all the vehicles used for transportation of school students and children particularly the buses, vans and three wheelers are not complied to the standard conditions and safety norms as prescribed by the Transport department, government of Manipur.
“Further, carrying of excess number of school children compromising their safety and comfort is a serious offense,” the notification said.
“Moreover, the vehicles used for transportation of school children should be regularly checked for their fitness and related documents like permits, PUCC, commercial registration, etc.”
It may be mentioned here that the state Chief Minister N Biren Singh had recently appealed to all the drivers of passenger vehicles plying in the state not to drive beyond the speed limit.
On the report of school vans carrying students beyond capacity, Biren Singh informed that verification will be initiated to check such school vans and action will be taken up against those drivers carrying students beyond capacity like cancelling of driving licence. Action will also be taken up against those schools where such van drivers are transporting students, he added.
He also stressed the need to provide awareness on rules on driving passenger vehicles to avoid any untoward incident.
