IMPHAL — Manipur has reported a sharp rise in dengue cases this year, with more than 3,000 people testing positive and one fatality, according to an official update released by the state health department on Friday. Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
Between January 1 and October 23, a total of 3,114 dengue cases were confirmed from tests conducted on 7,054 individuals, the report stated. Imphal West emerged as the worst-hit district with 2,186 cases, followed by Imphal East (556), Thoubal (408), and Bishnupur (346). The lone dengue-related death was recorded in Bishnupur.
In the past 24 hours alone, the state reported 77 new cases, with Imphal West accounting for 58, Imphal East 10, Tamenglong 4, and one case each from Bishnupur, Chandel, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, and Ukhrul, according to the Directorate of Health Services.

For comparison, Manipur recorded 2,463 dengue cases and five deaths in 2024, and 2,548 cases with no fatalities in 2023.
To curb the spread, the health department has conducted fogging in 1,968 localities, including six relief camps, and carried out 1,535 awareness campaigns, the report added.
Citing contributing factors, Dr S. Priyokumar, state Malaria officer, attributed the surge to unprecedented population growth, unplanned urbanisation, water supply management issues, and increased mosquito density.
Dengue was first reported in Moreh, a border town in Manipur, in 2007 and has since spread to other parts of the state.
