IMPHAL, October 26: Manipur’s Lok Sabha MP Dr Th Meinya Singh has condemned the firing during the Ukhrul visit of Manipur’s Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh on Monday.
In a statement, MP Dr Th Meinya Singh said, “This is an act of terrorism. Violence has no place in a democracy.”
Ten police personnel including six sub-inspectors, two assistant sub-inspectors and two head constables were suspended in connection with Tuesday’s firing incident.
On Tuesday, Governor Najma Heptulla also condemned the incident. Violence does not bring anything and one needs peace to bring development, she had said.
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee and BJP Manipur Pradesh also condemned the incident. Manipur BJP has demanded an inquiry by an independent body.
Manipur government has ordered an inquiry into the Ukhrul incident. Unidentified gunmen allegedly fired towards a helipad in the hill town minutes after a helicopter with Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh-led ministerial team took off.
Additional DGP (Intelligence) P Doungel has been appointed the enquiry officer to enquire into the circumstances leading to the incidents besides looking into lapse in security arrangements, if any, fix responsibility and submit a report within seven days.
