IMPHAL — In a week-long Inner Line Permit (ILP) verification drive in Senapati district, Manipur Police checked 2,412 individuals and found 170 without valid ILP documents and 134 with expired permits, as part of efforts to identify illegal immigrants and foreign nationals.
According to a press release on Wednesday night, the state police stated that the individuals without valid ILP documents were taken to the Mao gate ILP counter and required to obtain the necessary permits. The police added that, so far, no illegal immigrants have been identified during the operation.
“The drive was carried out in market areas, along the National Highway-2, Maram-Peren road, Tadubi-Tolloi road and other inter-village roads in all PS (Police Station) jurisdictions by Senapati District Police Task Force which was constituted for the above purpose. Also thorough checking continues to be carried on at all border entry points. This special drive will be continued in the days to come,” the release stated.

It may be mentioned that the ILP system came into effect in Manipur from January 1, 2020. Manipur became the fourth state after Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and Mizoram where the ILP regime is applicable.
In states that come under the ILP regime, outsiders, including people from other states of the country, need to take permission to visit them. The objective of the ILP system is to prevent the settlement of other Indian nationals in the states that come under it to protect the indigenous population in terms of land, jobs, and other facilities.
Interestingly more than 9 lakh Inner Line Permit (ILP) documents have already been issued while a sum of more than INR 13 crore were generated as revenue when the state celebrated five years of successful implementation of the ILP system in Manipur in December last year.
Following a high-level meeting in Imphal, Manipur implemented one of India's most rigorous Aadhaar issuance processes for adults last month. The move, reviewed by Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, aims to enhance identity verification due to the state's vulnerable border with Myanmar, ensuring national safety and security.
