IMPHAL — A Manipur police constable has been suspended after being arrested along with another person for his involvement in an extortion case, according to official sources.


According to people familiar with the development, a constable, identified as Md Amumacha and presently posted with the Criminal Investigation Department (Special Branch), Manipur Police, was arrested along with one Tampakmayum Arshad (25) from Yairipok Top Chingtha under Andro Police Station in Imphal East district on August 16.


Amumacha, a constable of Bishnupur district police, hails from Yairipok Tulihal Makha Leikai, while Arshad is a resident of Yairipok Idigah Manak – both located in Imphal East district.


“They have been remanded into police custody,” said the Manipur Police Control Room in a press note here on the night of August 18.

Manipur police, as a disciplined force reiterates its uncompromising stance against recalcitrant members of the department across all ranks and files, the press note added.


Meanwhile, a suspension order issued by the SP of Bishnupur district, which also surfaced on social media on Monday, stated that the police constable will remain at the Reserve Line of the Bishnupur district police during the suspension period and shall not leave the headquarters without prior approval from the competent authority.


In another development, security forces arrested one Md Sajid Khan (35) of Thoubal Moijing under Thoubal district from T Khullen, National Highway 2, under Senapati Police Station in Manipur’s Senapati district, and seized contraband weighing approximately 3.2 kilograms from his possession on August 18, police said.


One Mahindra Bolero, one mobile phone and one Aadhaar card were also seized from his possession, police added.
