Imphal, Sep. 18 (EMN): The World Bamboo Day was held in Manipur on Monday to give awareness about the uses of bamboo and its product to keep a healthy environment and also to give employment opportunities in the bamboo sectors to our artisans.
The day’s gala event begins with a bamboo run by school children in the morning followed by various forms of awareness programs based on this wonderful woody grass under the theme E3=Environment,Energy and Employment, at Singjamei Community Hall, Imphal.The programme was attended by Manipur assembly Speaker Yumnam Khemchand Singh and other officials.
Apart from opening of 5-Day Exhibition on Bmboo & Cane and Allied Crafts, a Painting Competition for Class I-IV and Class V-VIII on Bamboo for Environment, Energy & Employment will also been held on Sep. 19. It will be followed by symposium cum lecture on bamboo - its product and relation with environment, bamboo plantation, fashion show on bamboo and bamboo construction (sustainability).
The Day is being celebrated in the state as a part of the celebrations across the Globe on this special day after the day was celebrated for the first time at Prachan Buri in Thailand in 2009.Of the 57 varieties of bamboo in India, 44 are found in the North East while Manipur Forest department has identified 35 species including 12 industrial bamboo varieties in Manipur.
