In a significant achievement, Major General Laiphrakpam Nishikanta Singh popularly known as Major General LN Singh, has been approved for next rank, thereby making him only second officer from Manipur, after Lt Gen K Himalay Singh, to bring such laurels to the state, according to a press release.
Presently he is the Commandant of a Training Establishment of Indian Army.A JAKLI Officer, who played a key role in the rescue mission, in Afghanistan, in 2010, of Indian Medical Mission, after it was attacked by terrorists, is presently commanding a training establishment of the Army, says PRO (Defence Wing) in its press release. This mission sent back the body of Late Maj Laishram Jotin, who was later, awarded Ashok Chakra.
Having a wide experience of field service and profession knowledge, the General who having honour of Bar to Vishisht Seva Medal has also been awarded with ‘Army Commanders Commendation Card’ three times.
He did his initial schooling from Thingen LP School, Gurukul Junior High School and Tombisana School and later joined Sainik School Purulia. He had the distinction of securing first position in Manipur in CBSE’s Higher Secondary examination in 1975 and second in West Bengal securing distinction in two subjects and honours in the other two subjects.
He joined NDA in July 1975 and was commissioned into the Army (9 JAKLI) in June 1979. Having M Phil in Defence studies from Madras University, he has served all over India but mainly in J&K and North East, besides commanding the prestigious unit in Delhi and he was an Instructor at Army war College for more than two years. He also served in Bhutan on Deputation.
Married to Sanjenbam Nandita daughter of (L) Sanjenbam Vedajit Singh and Prabha Devi,who is granddaughter of the famous freedom fighter and former chief minister M Koireng Singh who fought as an INA (Indian National Army) worker against the British.
The General and his wife have traveled a including Israel, Poland, France, Italy, Myanmar, Singapore, Malaysia, Bhutan, Thailand, Swizerland etc. The couple has three daughters, Parveen who is an Assistant Manager in I Fly School of Indigo, Amita who is B Tech but is promoting boxing as a leisure sports and Deepa who is a graphic designer working with ‘Good Earth’.
