- IMPHAL — In a significant leap towards addressing
sustainable waste management system, an urban local body in Manipur
successfully launched the first ever mobile app for door-to-door waste
collection during a function held at Kakching district headquarters, 50 km
south of Imphal. There are 27 ULBs in the state.
- “The mobile app called ‘KMC D2D waste collection’ is first
of its kind developed in Manipur for the purpose of door-to-door waste
collection,” says caretaker chairperson of Kakching Municipal Council (KMC),
Naorem Sanjitkumar.
- According to him, the whole idea was to pay waste collection
bill and also to lodge any form of complaint online. The app would help the
households located in the Kakching area.

- There are 71,44 households as per 2011 census under KMC area
in Kakching district, wherein the concerned authority started to introduce
collection of segregated solid waste in forms namely dry, wet and hazardous
waste. Kakching town area generates around 6 metric tonnes of solid waste on a
weekly basis.
- The collected wet waste would be converted into compost,
while hazardous waste would be sent to inclinators and the plastic waste would
be sent to industrial units, the caretaker chairperson informed. On the other
hand, the left over solid waste would be deposited at the government identified
landfill located at Nongjubi hill area of Kakching.
- The senior chief executive officer, Laishram Romesh, said
consumers, after registering on the app, would be able to pay fees for the
waste collection service at their convenient time. He further said that the app
would help in creating a database of households and members. For now, the
registration process on the app will be carried out by the fee collectors, he
added.
