Chief Editor Wangkhemcha Shamjai of Kangleipakki Meira, an evening vernacular in Imphal has been re-elected as President of All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU), an apex body of the journalists’ community in the state during its election held at the Manipur Press Club premises in Imphal this afternoon. Shamjai bagged a total of 134 votes while his rival Ratneswori Goswami of Hueiyen Lanpao, popular vernacular got just 69 votes out of the total 206 votes polled today, reports from Manipur Press Club said. The polling was held from 1 to 4 pm. With today’s election, Shamjai has been elected as president of AMWJU for the third time in the history of the state’s media fraternity.In the previous election; he defeated Ahongsangbam Mobi, editor of Sanaleibak in the last presidential election.
Interestingly, six standing committee members were also elected out of 17 contestants during the day’s election. They are RK Bullu of Poknapham,Kh Meghajit of Naharolgi Thoudang, A Jiten of The Sangai Express, Jeet Ningomba of ISTV, S Nanda of Peoples’ Chronicle and Borun Thokchom of DY365. Bullu got 119,Meghajit 92,Jiten 89, Jeet 84,Nanda 69 and Borun 59 votes out of total 205 votes polled.The candidates for the standing committee who lost in the day's election include Y Nikesh of Manipur Update,freelance journalist BM Sunzu, Ch Meghabarna,editor Mannaba, A Birjit of Kangla Pao, Bijoy Laishram of Hueiyen Lanpao,Sarjan Yumnam of Impact TV,B Bokuljao of The Sangai Express, Priyo Achom of Universal News Agency, Th Milan of Manipur Mail, A Ranabir of Image TV and Th Ranjan of ISTV.
A total of 206 journalists out of 212 members of AMWJWU including 14 female members franchise their rights during the day’s election for a new executive committee for the term 2015-2017.
