IMPHAL — A mechanised rotary parking facility, billed as India’s first automatic multi-level rotary parking system, was inaugurated in Manipur’s capital Imphal on Saturday, with the facility expected to help ease traffic congestion in the city.
Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, accompanied by Thangmeiband MLA Khumukcham Joykishan Singh and state Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel, inaugurated the facility at Nagamapal, one of Imphal’s busiest commercial areas.
Officials of the state Smart City project were also present.
Sharing photographs of the inaugural function on social media, the chief minister described the facility as an important step towards creating more organised and efficient urban infrastructure in the capital.
“This is an important step towards building a more organised and efficient urban infrastructure for our capital. I am confident that such initiatives will contribute to a better and more convenient experience for the people of Imphal,” Khemchand Singh said.
Smart City CEO Th Harikumar said the facility is the first of its kind in India. According to him, the technology was patented by a South Korean company and has since been acquired by Kolkata-based LT Elevators.
The facility was constructed at an estimated cost of INR 8.40 crore and has been developed in response to the growing number of two- and four-wheelers and the resulting traffic congestion in Imphal.
The newly completed parking facility can accommodate 42 four-wheelers and 70 two-wheelers. It is awaiting completion of certain formalities before becoming operational.
Harikumar said the Smart City authorities are also planning to develop similar rotary parking facilities at three more locations in and around Imphal.
