IMPHAL — Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam on Monday chaired a crucial meeting on safe and peaceful return of internally displaced persons (IDP) in Bishnupur district headquarters, 30 km south of Imphal.
Held at the conference hall of DC Bishnupur, the meeting was attended by former Education Minister and MLA Thounaojam Basantakumar Singh, MLAs Irengbam Nalini Devi (Oinam), Tongbram Robindro Singh (Thanga), Sanasam Premchandra Singh (Kumbi), Additional DGP L Kailun, Deputy Commissioners and SPs of Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts.
Sharing about the meeting on social media, the home minister wrote: “Our discussion focused on the safe and peaceful return of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), prioritising rehabilitation, security, and welfare measures. We remain firmly committed to restoring peace, normalcy, and harmony across the region.”
He had met with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi and reviewed the law and order situation in Manipur on April 13.
A total of 58,881 people remained displaced in Manipur as of March 30 this year, nearly three years after the ethnic violence erupted in the state on May 3, 2023. The figure was provided by the state authority in response to an RTI filed by a congress leader.
Last month, Manipur witnessed widespread protests across five districts after the outbreak of fresh violence following a bomb attack that left two children dead, while tyhe mother sustained critical injury at Tronglaobi in Bishnupur district on April 7.
