Imphal, Jan. 21 (EMN): The Great Britain emerged as champions in the 5th Manipur Statehood Day Women’s Polo Tournament, which concluded at the historic Mapal Kangjeibung Polo Ground on Tuesday.
In the semi-final match, Great Britain defeated last year’s runners-up USA team by a huge margin of 5-2 before beating defending champions Argentina in the final to win the title.
The USA, Great Britain, Argentina, Egypt, Manipur and Indian Polo Association women’s team participated in the tournament which began on January 17.
The tournament is part of the Manipur Tourism department’s campaign to save the unique and endangered Manipuri pony and to promote Polo tourism in the state- the birthplace of modern polo.
Manipur governor Dr. Najma Heptulla attended the closing of the tournament and prize distribution ceremony.
The women polo tourney was organised by AMPA in partnership with Polo Yatra, the Indian women’s polo initiative of Huntre! Equine under the sponsorship of the department of Tourism ministry.
