Manipur govt working at sanctuary for Manipuri Pony

IMPHAL, NOVEMBER 22: Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh has said that the state’s government has taken steps to initiate the establishment of an exclusive sanctuary for the Manipuri Pony. The chief minister was speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural function of the 10th Manipur Polo International 2016 at the historic Mapal Kangjeibung, also known as the Polo ground. The event was organised as a part of the Manipur Sangai Festival 2016. Ibobi said that the Manipur government was taking action to declare the Manipuri Pony as an endangered breed ‘to be preserved for future generations in Manipur, India and the world.’ The Manipuri Pony is one of the five species of ponies recognised by the government of India. The pony is considered the most sacred of all animals in Manipur and is associated with religion, arts and culture, martial arts etc of the state. Ibobi expressed belief that the polo fraternity all over the world would appreciate the initiative of the state’s government. Further, the chief minister said that Sagol Kangjei (polo) has been played in Manipur since time immemorial. “We are indebted to our forefathers who have handed down to us this game which has become a popular game of the present world,” he said. Wishing the foreign players and visitors a comfortable and memorable stay in Manipur, the chief minister also invited foreign polo teams besides Indian polo teams to join the 11th edition of the tournament next year. Four foreign polo teams, one each from Australia, England, Kenya and the USA, and two Indian teams–India (A) representing the Indian Polo Association and India (B) from Manipur are taking part in the 10th edition of the Manipur Polo International. The event has been organised by the Manipur Horse Riding & Polo Association. The tournament will continue till the 29th of the month. Earlier, the chief minister took the salute of a March Past of the participating teams. A cultural performance was also organised by the Rhythms of Manipur as a part of the inaugural function.
