Yumnam Khemchand Singh has assured students that the state government will move a proposal to discuss NRC implementation in Manipur during the Assembly session beginning September 2.

IMPHAL — Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Thursday assured a delegation of students that the state government would move a proposal to discuss the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur during the ensuing Assembly session beginning September 2.
The assurance came during a meeting between the chief minister and a delegation of students representing 10 schools and colleges at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat in Imphal.
The students urged the chief minister to press the Centre to order the implementation of the NRC in Manipur before the Census.
They also called for the detection of illegal immigrants through the NRC before the conduct of the Census and sought a discussion on the issue during the forthcoming Assembly session.
The delegation also urged the government to reopen educational institutions in the state.
Responding to the demands, Khemchand said the government supports the implementation of the NRC in Manipur.
However, he noted that both the conduct of the NRC and its error-free implementation are issues that need to be addressed.
The meeting was attended by Commissioner of Education Ningthoujam Geoffrey and Director of School Education Ng Bhogendra Meitei.
The student delegation comprised representatives from DM College of Science, Manipur College, CC Higher Secondary School, Johnstone Higher Secondary School, Nambol Higher Secondary School, TG Higher Secondary School, Ibotonsana Girls Higher Secondary School, Ram Lal Paul School, Model Higher Secondary School and Ananda Singh Higher Secondary School.
Later, sharing photographs of the meeting on X, the chief minister said the students had urged the early implementation of the NRC in Manipur before the Census to detect illegal immigrants.
He added that he had assured them that the government would discuss the NRC in the Assembly session beginning September 2.
Meanwhile, the state government has ordered the closure of all schools affiliated with the Board of Secondary Education, Council of Higher Secondary Education and Central Board of Secondary Education, as well as colleges and higher education institutions, including universities, for three days until August 22 in view of the prevailing situation in the state.
