Imphal, August 21 (EMN):: In an effort to promote science and technology in various development programmes, the state authority is all set to construct two district science centres and planetarium in Churachandpur and Ukhrul district. At present the state has one science centre in Imphal.
The construction works will start by the end of this month or early part of next month, says Director E Ibocha of State Science and Technology department. The North Eastern Council has released the required funds for the two centres. The civil works will be taken up by the Manipur Tribal Development Corporation while the exhibit portion will be looked after by the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), Government of India.
The department has also proposed to set up Science Centre and Planetarium in every district headquarters in a phased manner.
The department is also planning to develop technology museum at the existing Manipur Science centre at Takyelpat so that the outdated and unused equipments and machines could be displayed for the younger generation besides creating a innovation hub under the National Innovation Council through the NCSM, he added.
The 32 year old department which has two registered societies - Manipur Remote Sensing Applications Centre (MARSAC) and Manipur Science and Technology Council (MASTEC) which had been organising short-term activities such as science meet, observation of world intellectual property day, national mathematics day, national science day, millennium science lectures, state level aquarium and flower exhibition, training on remote sensing, GPS and GIS, training in learning science through low- cost hands-on experiments etc.
