
Manipur Governor La Ganesan was accorded a warm welcome during his maiden visit to Behiang, a border village under Singngat sub-division in the state’s Churachandpur district, on Tuesday.
The Governor also visited a forward post of A Company of 46 Assam Rifles in the border village, located about 125 km south of Imphal, and interacted with the officers and jawans.
He also attended an interaction programme with district-level officers (DLOs), representatives of civil society organisations (CSOs), village chiefs, chairmen and villagers at Behiang public ground.
During the interaction, Ganesan listened to the issues and grievances raised by them and assured to extend all possible help in the larger interest of the people.
Speaking at the interaction programme, he said although there may be some issues which need special attention, but most of the issues related to education, healthcare, connectivity etc., should be taken care of and assured to look into them.
The governor said he will ask the departments concerned to look into the various issues and grievances, and also convey to the chief minister to take necessary steps.
Ganesan also said the issues of drug abuse, poppy cultivation and drug trafficking have been major issues and that the state government has been trying its best to check such menaces.
Stating that the number of drug users, particularly among the youths, has increased manifold during the last few months, he said preventive measures have to be taken through collective efforts of CSOs and general public.
Expressing concern over the issues of illegal migration, smuggling of drugs and weapons, he said, “sneaking of illegal migrants from neighbouring countries into our territory should be prevented at any cost.”
Appealing people to extend full cooperation to the security forces and authority concerned to contain crimes, the Governor said, “only then, the peace loving people of this beautiful state will be able to live peacefully.”
On Covid vaccination, he said, vaccination is the first step to prevent the pandemic and appealed the villagers to get vaccinated at least twice at the earliest.
The governor also spoke on the importance of Swachh Bharat Mission.
Singngat MLA, Chinlunthang, who also took part in the interaction programme, thanked the governor for visiting the border village, which has a lot of potential in tourism and trade.
Earlier, the DLOs highlighted on various developmental activities being taken up in the district. The United Zou Organisation submitted a memorandum to the governor requesting for setting up of a public library at Behiang.
