Four killed and two injured in separate violence incidents in Manipur’s Kamjong district, prompting a shutdown in Kangpokpi.
IMPHAL — At least four people, including a woman, were killed and two others injured in separate incidents of violence in Manipur’s Kamjong district over the past 24 hours, according to sources familiar with the matter.
In the first incident, two people, including a woman, were killed and two others injured in the Chassad area following a scuffle between security personnel and protesters over the alleged detention of youths on Friday night. Violence reportedly continued into Saturday morning, sources said.
The deceased were identified as Domkhonei Touthang, a woman from Chassad, and Michael Haokip, also from the same area.
However, unconfirmed reports claimed that the death toll in the Chassad incident had risen to three.
The injured were taken to Kamjong District Hospital for treatment.
More than 20 houses were also reportedly burnt in the Chassad area. Following the incidents, the district administration imposed prohibitory orders in the area, particularly around the Chassad Police Gate junction, within a radius of 400 metres.
In a separate incident, two people were killed in a firing by suspected armed miscreants in the Ningchou area of Kamjong district at around 9.30 am on Saturday, sources said.
The deceased were identified as Ngachanso Nigshen and Leishisan Leishadang, both residents of Ningchou.
The circumstances leading to the firing remained unclear at the time of filing this report.
Meanwhile, the Kangpokpi-based Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) reportedly announced a 24-hour total shutdown across Kangpokpi district from 6 pm on Saturday, citing security concerns following the incidents of violence in Chassad, Kamjong district.
