Manipur observes Hijam Irabot’s 130th birth anniversary, with CM Yumnam Khemchand Singh highlighting his ideals of social justice
IMPHAL, SEP. 30 (EMN) — The 130th birth anniversary of Jana Neta Hijam Irabot, remembered for his role in the social and political movements of Manipur, was observed at the state level in Imphal on Wednesday.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, Art & Culture and Tourism Minister Khurajam Loken Singh and several MLAs attended the observance, along with former MPs, the Chief Secretary, senior government officials, police personnel and students.
Speaking on the occasion, Khemchand said Irabot’s life and ideals continued to hold relevance for Manipur, and called upon government employees, civil society organisations and students to carry forward his spirit of sacrifice, service and social responsibility.
The Chief Minister paid floral tribute at Irabot’s memorial and recalled his contributions to social and political change in the State.
He also highlighted Irabot’s contribution to creating social awareness through his writings and journalistic activities. According to the Chief Minister, Irabot published Meitei Chanu in 1922, described as the first journal to raise awareness about Manipuri society and its issues.
Khemchand further recalled Irabot’s vision of harmony and peaceful coexistence among Manipur’s 36 communities living across the hills and valleys. He said Irabot’s ideals of unity, social justice and collective progress should continue to guide the people of the state.
