Manipur begins data collection of internally displaced persons

IMPHAL — The Manipur government has initiated an exercise to create a comprehensive database of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) affected by the ongoing conflict, which has continued for more than two years since May 2023.

A notice issued on Friday by the Deputy Commissioner of Bishnupur district stated that the data will be collected through a dedicated portal developed by the state’s Information Technology department. The exercise will cover IDPs staying in both relief camps and other informal locations.

As part of this effort, the Bishnupur district administration has nearly completed data collection from IDPs residing in local relief camps. IDPs staying outside the camps in the district have been instructed to contact concerned authorities to register their details by June 26, 2025.

Similarly, the Deputy Commissioner of Imphal West district earlier issued a notice asking all IDPs outside relief camps to report to the authorities by June 25, 2025, for the same purpose.

Manipur has witnessed widespread unrest since May 3, 2023, when a student rally in Churachandpur district turned violent and triggered ethnic clashes across the state. Over 250 people have reportedly lost their lives and more than 50,000 were displaced from their homes.

While many of the displaced continue to live in relief camps within the state, a significant number have taken shelter elsewhere, including outside Manipur.

Meanwhile, the Thadou Inpi Manipur, a body representing the Thadou community, has urged both central and state governments to officially recognize a third category of displaced persons—those who have received no government assistance since the beginning of the crisis. The group maintains that these individuals remain unaccounted for and vulnerable despite being severely impacted by the conflict.
