IMPHAL, September 1: The 12-hour bandh which was later shorten to 6 hours in Manipur hit the normal life particularly in the state capital on Thursday.
The bandh which started from 6 a.m, was called by the proscribed outfit Kangleipak Communist Party Poirei Meitei Lup in protest against the silence of the government to all the anomalies happening inside the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences, which is one of the biggest hospitals in Manipur. However, there is no report of any untoward incidents during the course of the bandh which was shortened at 12 noon today.
Meanwhile, Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) Mayor, Soram Sunil has appealed to all concerned to exempt the persons engaged in cleaning of the city during general strike or bandh.
Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, the mayor said these employees of the corporation need to be relaxed like the people attending religious functions, essential services and patients during bandhs. Sunil said Manipur is placed at the 15th position in the Smart City competition. He stated that the garbage continues to pile up in the city during bandhs causing grievous inconveniences to the people. To keep the city neat and clean the mayor appealed to all to relax the IMC employees so that they can do their duties without apprehension and keep Imphal neat and clean.
In another development, Worker’s Union Manipur (WUM) on Wednesday also appealed to all the concerned to put an end to the culture of bandh and blockades in the State. WUM president K London, said the State has seen far too many bandhs in the past few months as if there is no governance. On the other hand, Commerce and Industries Minister Govindas Konthoujam while speaking at the opening event of the Transgender’s and Male Weaver’s Production Show cum Expo 2016 here on Wednesday also said that the growing trend of bandh and blockade in Manipur not only disturbs normal lives, but also has a huge impact on the economy of the State.
