Imphal, Oct. 2 (EMN): Manipur state on Tuesday paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi on his 149th birth anniversary with Governor Dr. Najma Heptulla and Chief Minister N Biren Singh offering floral tribute to the Father of the Nation at the Gandhi Memorial hall in Imphal.
Speaking at the state-level observation programme, the governor said the young generation should try to imbibe the virtues of tolerance and humanism from the teachings of Gandhi.
“For Gandhiji, political independence of India was not the end. It was the beginning of a real freedom i.e. economic freedom of the country,” she said.
The chief minister appreciated the efforts of government officials and schools authorities for carrying out cleanliness drive regularly in their premises.
Citing the bandh called by police constables, he said that the case is still at the High Court so the government can’t act on it unless it is disposed. He appealed the people to refrain from initiating bandhs and blockades.
“Manipur could be the number one state in the country if we build up a productive work culture and refrain from bandhs, strikes and blockades in the state,” he asserted.
Regarding the ongoing situation in Manipur University, the chief minister informed that talk is in process to restore normalcy in the university. He also urged the people to support and co-operate with the government to resolve the crisis.
National Cleanliness Day was observed by various organisations at different locations in the state.
Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) also observed the National Cleanliness Day at Congress Bhavan with MPCC President TN Haokip, CLP leader and former CM O Ibobi and others. Speaking to reporters, Ibobi said cleanliness is next to god according to Gandhiji, so every citizen should do the needful to realise his dream of cleanliness.
Meanwhile, Governor Dr. Najma Heptulla handed over the certificate of Open Defecation Free (ODF) Manipur to Chief Minister N Biren Singh. Thus, Manipur become the 23rd ODF state in India and 5th ODF state in NE India. The governor also handed over the best ‘Swachhgrahi’ to seven individuals for their selfless and outstanding contribution in organising Information, Education and Communication (IEC) campaign on sanitation and safe drinking water.
Arunachal Pradesh: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Tuesday paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on his 149th birth anniversary here and also took part in a cleanliness drive organised to mark the event.
The chief minister flagged off 11 trucks of the Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) that would add to the garbage collection fleet of vehicles.
Khandu congratulated the IMC for procuring new vehicles and told the corporation to carry out the work of garbage collection diligently.
He said the motto of keeping Itanagar clean and green should be followed with full sincerity and dedication.
The event was organized by the capital district administration, along with IMC and Urban Development & Housing department, an official release said.
