Imphal, Aug. 27 (EMN): The All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) on Saturday observed the 57th Hunger Marchers’ Day reminiscing the August 27, 1965 mass movement that protested an artificial famine-like situation in the state.
The observation began in Imphal with prayers at the memorial site at Pishum hillock, Singjamei in Imphal West district in the name of the four martyrs who lost their lives during the movement.
President AMSU, Haobijam Chalamba hoisted the flag of the AMSU and inaugurated the day’s programme.
A public meeting was also organised at the AMSU headquarters in Imphal after holding a mass procession with active participation of a large number of students from Pishum hillock to DM University campus Thangmeiband.
Speaking on the occasion, Chalamba urged the government to take up necessary steps to avoid recurrence of artificial scarcity of foodgrains in the state.
He also expressed his apprehension about facing low production of rice in the region so as to depend on the population on the rice imported from outside considering the present situation including the report of unavailability of the urea (fertiliser) during its season.
