Search continues for a 30-year-old construction worker swept away by a rain-swollen stream during heavy rain in Churachandpur, Manipur
IMPHAL — A 30-year-old man was allegedly swept away after falling into a rain-swollen stream in Manipur's Churachandpur district during heavy rainfall on Thursday evening, sources said.
The incident occurred at around 4.30 pm while the man was working on a retaining wall at the Ebenezer Car Wash construction site near the Lanva River, which flows through Churachandpur town, about 65 km south of Imphal.
The victim has been identified as Thang Johnson (30) of Vengnuam South, New Lamka. According to district sources, he allegedly fell into the swollen stream, where repair work was underway, and was swept away by the strong current.
Search operations were continuing at the time of filing this report, and the victim remained untraced.
"The Young Paite Association is leading the search operation round the clock," a Churachandpur resident said. "Several philanthropic organisations in the district are also assisting in the rescue effort."
Rescue teams have expanded the search to downstream areas in an effort to locate the missing man.
Meanwhile, family members and residents of Vengnuam South and New Lamka have appealed to the public to inform the authorities if they have any information that could help trace him.
Churachandpur witnessed intense rainfall for about an hour from around 4 p.m. on Thursday, inundating several low-lying localities. Drains, streams and small rivers overflowed, causing waterlogging in many parts of the town.
Although the floodwaters receded after the rain stopped, residents spent much of the evening and night cleaning their homes and courtyards.
Meanwhile, the Assam Rifles extended relief assistance to families affected by the heavy rainfall in Hingtam village of Churachandpur district. Continuous rain damaged several households, causing hardship and disrupting normal life.
