A major fire was averted this evening at Signal Angami Colony which reportedly originated from an unattended candle left behind by the tenant whose house partially damaged in the inferno.
According to Fire Services, the incident happened at around 7 p.m. in the absence of the house tenant who reportedly went on errand after locking the room with a burning candle. On seeing the fire, residents of the Colony informed the Fire Service and also broke open the room and fought the fire from spreading to surrounding areas.
Three fire tenders were pressed into service. However, on reaching the site the situation was already brought under control by the neighbors. On close examination, it was found that the fire started from a burning candle. The bed of the house tenant was almost completely burnt, Fire Services personnel said.
It was the ever vigilance of the residents which prevented major disaster. The tenant of the house was found absent during the incident and not reported till filing of this report. Though no untoward incident was reported, the house was partially damaged, report said.
With the Sunday evening fire incident, Dimapur has also experienced three unprecedented calamities in the past one week. The first being the major earthquake on January 4, followed by a hailstorm on January 9.
