DIMAPUR — In a significant collaborative outreach initiative, the National Commission for Women (NCW), in partnership with the Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW), will be organising ‘Mahila Jan Sunwai’ (public hearings) across the state from March 9 to the 13th, commemorating ‘International Women’s Day’ and reinforcing the collective commitment towards women’s safety, dignity, and access to justice.
In a press release, the NSCW stated that the week-long nationwide public hearing drive aims to provide women with a direct, accessible platform to voice their grievances and seek institutional support.
Through coordinated effort, complaints related to domestic violence, workplace harassment, maternity benefit, abandonment, trafficking, and other forms of gender-based injustice will be heard and addressed.

Swift redressal & on-ground support
A key highlight of the ‘Mahila Jan Sunwai’ is the focus on time-bound and swift grievance redressal. Dedicated benches comprising chairpersons and members from the NSCW, district administration, district legal services authority (DALSA), police authorities, legal experts, and protection officers will be present to ensure immediate hearing of complaints, registration and escalation of serious cases, legal guidance and procedural assistance and time-bound follow-up mechanisms.
Walk-in complaints shall also be heard during the Jan Sunwai from March 9 to the 13th.
Strengthening grassroots access to justice
By taking the grievance redressal mechanism directly to districts and grassroots levels, the initiative seeks to bridge institutional gaps and ensure that women especially from rural areas receive prompt institutional support without procedural delays, it stated.
International Women’s Day with action
“Organised as an ode to International Women’s Day (March 8), the ‘Mahila Jan Sunwai’ reflects the vision of moving beyond symbolic celebration towards tangible justice delivery and empowerment.
“The initiative underscores the shared resolve of national and state bodies to create safer, more responsive ecosystems for women across India,” the release added.
The Mahila Jan Sunwai will be held on March 9 in Tuensang, Zunheboto, Tseminyu and Wokha districts; on March 10 in Mokokchung and Niuland districts; March 11 in Chümoukedima district; March 12 in Longleng and Peren districts; and March 13 in Mon, Kohima and Dimapur districts.
