Dimapur, November 26 : The Lotha Baptist church has rejected the proposed uniform Civil Code that the central government is considering to formulate for the entire country. The church organization expressed concern that the bill was likely to infringe the social, cultural and religious rights of the minorities in India and that would ultimately destroy the very secular fabric of the Constitution of India.
The Lotha Baptist Churches Association (LBES, Lotha Baptist Ekhümkho Sanrhyutsü) issued a press release on Saturday stating its stand on said code by the Government of India.
The church organization stated in one length: “As many writers, organizations, groups and associations had shared their opinion on the demerits if the bill is finally introduced, the LBES had also carefully considered the provisions of the proposed bill and had come to the conclusion that the introduction of the bill is likely to infringe the social, cultural and religious rights of the minorities in India which will ultimately destroy the very secular fabric of the Constitution of India.”
In line with the stand taken by the Nagaland Baptist Church Council, the organization has expressed its opposition to a uniform Civil Code. It assured to “fervently appeal to the chairman, Law Commission of India to sincerely represent the ‘voice of the people’ to the Government of India.”
The organization has appealed to all the right-thinking citizens of India, especially the minority communities, to step forward and express their opposition to the proposed bill.
