A program marking National Education Day was celebrated on November 11 in Longleng district the event for the district was conducted in the EBRC hall of Tamlu sub-division.
To commemorate the day, an inter-school literary competition with the theme “Save the girl educate her” as well as an orientation program on the education campaign ‘‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” wasorganized by the establishments of the extra assistance commissioner and chairman of the Block Task Force, Tokai V Sumi.
Altogether 11 schools took part in the competition. The competition was on drawing, for the lower classes, and extempore speech, for higher classes.
National Education Day is an annual observance in India to commemorate the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first education minister of independent India, who served from 15 August 1947 until 2 February 1958. National Education Day of India is celebrated on 11 November every year.
After the literary competition, a program on the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (Save Daughter Educate Daughter) was conducted. The Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao is a government of India scheme that aims to generate awareness and improving the efficiency of welfare services meant for women.
The scheme was initiated with an initial corpus of 100 crore (US$15 million).
During the event, M Shayung Phom, the ADC of Tamlu, and Dr. Chai-e, medical officer of Tamlu spoke about various issues of discrimination, sex selection, unwanted pregnancies, abortions and host of issues related to the welfare of the girl-child.
The day ended with prize distribution. Meilung phom, women pastor of Kangching Bastist Church said the benediction.
The winners in the drawing category: the first prize went to Hongpah of Christian School; the second prize went to P Hongkam of the government high school of Kanching; the third prize went to Shamnyu of government primary school of Tamlu village
In the extempore speech competition B Tenlong of Christian School won the first prize; Shongna of GHS of Tamlu town won the second prize and Mongoi of GHS of Tamlu town won the third prize.
