The 16 days of activism against gender-based violence was conducted at the Hukphang junction in Longleng, updates stated.

The government publicity agency the department of Information and Public Relations (IPR) gave updates on Tuesday about the event.

Shayung Phom, the deputy commissioner of Longleng district, gave the keynote address. He spoke about the ways that may do away with violence against women. According to the IPR, he said women alone cannot fight the violence against them in such a large society. But men should come forward, raise their voice for the safety of their wives, sisters, daughters and society, he said.

The official added that in order to ‘save our women and girl child and for the uplift of our women folk,’ the government of India had launched several schemes for the benefit of women in the country. He was stated to have urged not only the women but also the men to learn about the various schemes for the welfare of their family and society, the IPR stated.

A brief introduction about ‘generation equality’ was given by Ongthai Phom, vice president of the Phomla Hoichem of Longleng, the IPR stated. She urged the gathering to take the program and such events as an opportunity for the welfare of the society.

Further, Ongthai advised the women to come forward and speak up for their rights and to seek help from the district task force of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Mahila Shakti Kendra-district level centre for women, or the Sakhi-one stop centre, or the Phomla Hoichem, the Phom women apex organisation, who work in support of women in distress.

As part of the programme, a procession expressing solidarity against gender violence was conducted from Hukphang junction till the Lempong junction in Longleng, the IPR stated.
