The District Health Society of Longleng district has launched activities for distribution of Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets (LLINs) in Medical ward in Longleng town on February 18. The program is being undertaken under the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP).
The programme was formally launched by deputy commissioner of Longleng district, Y. Denngan Avennoho Phom. In his address, the deputy commissioner encouraged the beneficiaries to utilize the insecticidal nets given by the government ‘to protect themselves from malaria.’ He also thanked the department for organising the programme for the benefit of the community.
The Chief Medical Officer of Longleng, Dr. Ritu Thurr, also spoke during the event. In his speech, the health official spoke about the importance of Long Lasting Insecticidal Nets and urged the beneficiaries to utilize them ‘properly in order to prevent malaria.’
Citizens’ Factfile: What are the long lasting
insecticidal nets?
An LLIN is a mosquito net impregnated with insecticide. The insecticide is cleverly bound within the fibres that make up the netting and is ‘slow released’ over a 4-5 year period. Hence ‘long lasting’. Insecticide treated nets therefore provide two levels of protection.
The most effective means of preventing malaria is sleeping under a mosquito net, specifically a long-lasting insecticide treated net (LLIN). Each net costs about $3, lasts for 3-4 years, and protects, on average, two people.
