Local contributions should be involved for development: R Tohonba

Staff Reporter Dimapur, August 18 The 6th road repaired by Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) was inaugurated today at New Market Area with Parliamentary Secretary Municipal Affairs, Economics and Statistics, R. Tohonba as chief guest in the presence of Secretary Municipal Affairs Cell, Dr. Maongwati Aier (IAS) During a short inaugural programme, Tohonba said, Dimapur city is witnessing a major difference with constructions being taken up for the welfare of the society. He said, the municipal cannot run just with the help of government or sponsors but through tax collections. He said, local contributions should also be involved in order to bring development and to upgrade the city into a smarter and cleaner one. On migration of people from rural to urban areas, he said, the need for upgradations in all kinds have become a must. “Along with the upgradation, hygienic living with proper sanitation systems should also be felt and experienced among the people.” Dr. Maongwati Aier who was also present during the programme said that the department is working on providing dumping sites for all the 21 sectors of Dimapur while highlighting the importance of sanitation for a cleaner and better Dimapur. More on page 5 He also emphasized on the “housing for all’ scheme launched by Prime Minister of India. Chief Executive Office DMC, Atokhe Ayemi said that the department till date has inaugurated 6 roads, 33 dustbins while drainages are being constructed in every necessary locations under DMC’s jurisdiction. He appealed to general public to inculcate civic sense and belongingness. He also appealed to business community to minimize the uses and disposal of plastic bags as they cause blockages in the drains. He said, DMC is set to organize an awareness campaign on sanitation and that the department plans to perform street play, seminars etc. The newly constructed road at New Market with a stretch of 487.62 sqm and drain length 68.4 m, drainages at both sides with cover slab is said to have been left untouched for more than 10 years. Officer on Special Duty (OSD) Sanjay, President Dimapur Chambers of Commerce, Hotovi Chishi and business community of New Market Area were present at the programme.
