LJP leader S Richard Humtsoe calls for dignity and historical perspective regarding SC Jamir's legacy.
DIMAPUR — National Secretary of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) S Richard Humtsoe has stated that the legacy and public service of former Chief Minister SC Jamir deserve to be viewed in their proper historical and constitutional context.
In a press statement, Humtsoe said that Jamir's contribution to public life goes far beyond a reference to him merely as an "old man".
He pointed out that Jamir served as chief minister of Nagaland five times and subsequently as governor of Goa, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Odisha, besides serving in parliament and the Union government.
He stated that whatever political differences may exist, decades of public service and constitutional responsibility deserve due recognition and dignity, noting that historical assessments regard Jamir as a veteran statesman and an important figure in Nagaland's political journey.
Clarifying his response to recent remarks made by a political leader concerning Jamir, Humtsoe said his intention was not to criticise or question any political leader's position, adding that political affiliation should not prevent anyone from acknowledging a truthful or legitimate stance.
Humtsoe stated that public discussions concerning senior statesmen should be conducted with dignity, historical perspective, and responsible language.
He noted that while political positions can be debated, history should not be diminished and public service should be respected.
He appealed for discussion on the Naga political issue to be conducted with facts, constitutional principles, and mutual respect rather than personal labels, adding that political differences are temporary while public service becomes part of history.
