Kohima, Nov. 25 (EMN): “Holistic education is what we need today in our society. Education that empowers our people to have the dignity of labour, respect for others, allowing differences of opinion, have civic sense and above all, know the ways of our Lord Jesus Christ without the need to demonstrate it in a competitive manner,” said Tokheho Yepthomi, minister for School Education while speaking at the silver jubilee celebration of Mount Olive College Kohima on November 25.
Established in 1992 with the motto ‘Onward and Upward,’ the college celebrated its 25th years of existence with Tokheho Yepthomi, minister for School Education as the chief guest.
The politician said there are too many educated unemployed today in the state and suggested that academic qualifications have become a bane in the society because many do not understand the dignity of labour.
“It is never too late to take corrective measures if we want a better society. Let us do away with scepticism and ridicule instead let us join hands and work together. Let us not get swiped by momentary gratifications,” said Yepthomi.
“Our ancestors have already shown us that we need not depend on others to make an honest living. Let us try and revive that precious value with a sense of belonging,” said Yepthomi. He said the forefather did not depend on outside help to make a living but lived in villages and were self-sufficient and happy adding no work was too small for them.
“Today, we have urbanised and are all armed with degrees and qualifications but cannot earn a living. Academic knowledge is very important but it is not an end in itself,” asserted Yepthomi.
He also acknowledged the visionary initiative of Sumi Baptist Church for setting up a strong foundation for the college and appealed to the church to continue such initiative for the betterment of the people.

Y Kikheto Sema, chairman and board of deacon of Sumi Baptist Church Kohima, said the college was formed with a vision not only to impart quality education but also teach the value of life. He also mentioned that there was a chaplain ever since its inception to uplift the morale of the student community.
Tokheni Sema, in her welcome address, said that the college started with a modest beginning in the church premises in the year 1992 with 77 BA Arts students keeping in mind to nurture and train the students to contribute positively to the society.
Earlier, a monolith was unveiled by the chief guest to mark the occasion and the dedicatory prayer was pronounced by Dr. Hokheto, pastor of Sumi Baptist Church Kohima.
