Dimapur, October 3: District Legal Services Authorities (DLSA) commemorated the International Day of Older People by organising various programmes for older people (senior citizens) in their respective district headquarters on October 1.
Legal Services Authorities felt the need to raise legal awareness amongst senior citizens of their rights to be well taken care of and made to feel special besides informing them about other rights, maintenance and welfare measures. It was also a day to appreciate and show gratitude for their contributions towards the development in the society.
In Tuensang, the Tuensang District Legal Services Authority organised the programme on the theme ‘Take a stand against ageism’ at CKS Hall, Tuensang town. Deputy Commissioner, Tuensang, Alem Jongshi spoke on the importance of the day and informed on the several benefits provided by the governments through various schemes.
N Kano, Civil Judge and Secretary of Tuensang District Legal Services, spoke on ‘Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act’ by highlighting on the various provision of the Act such as providing adequate healthcare for aged persons, social care and protection. He said senior citizens are a treasure to the society and it is obligatory for the society and government institutions to play responsible roles toward their lives.
In Peren, the Peren District Legal Services Authority led by Somet Chang, Secretary of Peren District Legal Services Authority and Civil Judge (Jr.) along with panel lawyers organised a special programme for the older people at Town Hall, Peren.
Chang spoke on the ‘Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act’ and the provisions for providing care and protection for parents and elderly people.
Later, oldest male and female were selected among the hundred older people participating in the programme and presented gift in honoring their good and happy life.
In Longleng, the day was marked by a special programme for the senior citizens day organised by the Longleng District Legal Services Authority in the DC’s conference hall, Longleng.
Victo Sema, Chief Judicial Magistrate and Secretary of Longleng District Legal Services Authority, along with the panel lawyers apprised the senior citizens on the various protection and welfare schemes for senior citizens by the government.
Victo said the legal services authorities were committed to provide effective legal assistance in issues relating to maintenance and welfare of parents and senior citizens.
Awareness on healthcare and social care such as arranging separate queues for senior citizens, so that they don’t have to wait long in the queue, were highlighted by the panel lawyers of Longleng DLSA.
