On October 23, the Kohima District Legal Services Authority organized a legal awareness programme on constitutional provisions and schemes for the “differently-abled persons. Lawyer with the Human Rights Law Network, Zheviholi Swu, was the resource person for the event.
Chief Judicial Magistrate Mezivolu T. Therieh highlighted the importance of the Legal Services Authority and encouraged parents of differently-abled children to come forward and avail legal services and legal aid. She said that one of the major concerns of the Legal Services Authority was to spread legal awareness and legal literacy amongst the citizens of the state, as well as to conduct Lok Adalat for settling civil and minor criminal case, bank loans, matrimonial disputes, etc.
Resource person Zheviholi Swu talked on the topic “constitutional provisions and Schemes for the differently-abled persons with enable.” She emphasized on the important rights of children who are with disabilities, under the Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles of State policies and various other constitutional schemes.
Further, she highlighted various schemes which disabled persons can avail: Integrated Education for the Disabled Children, Children’s Educational Allowance, Assistance to Disabled Persons for purchase /fitting of aids/appliance, National Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation, and the Inclusive Education for Disabled at secondary Stage.
There was interactive session after the main event where parents of disabled persons and the participants poured out their grievances with regard to non-payment of scholarships, funds, lack of aids/appliance, lack of Resource Centers, lack of special trained teachers at government aided school.
KDLSA encouraged them to take up the matters with the appropriate authorities under which the schemes have been made available.
