DIMAPUR — Krishi
Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Zunheboto, Nagaland University, conducted a poultry
incubator distribution programme to promote sustainable livelihoods through
backyard poultry farming on November 27 at the KVK conference hall, Lumami. The
event was sponsored by NABARD, Dimapur.
According to a press release, speaking on the occasion, Dr.
Rakesh Kumar Chaurasia, principal scientist and head, mentioned that a total of
60 farmers from five villages were provided with 100 birds each, along with one
month's supply of poultry feed, feeders, and drinkers.
The birds have started laying at Sumi Settsu village, while
the birds in the other villages are three to four months old.
He informed that under the project, each village will be
provided with an egg incubator with a 230-egg capacity, which will help sustain
the project and facilitate the further multiplication of Rainbow Rooster birds.
The chicks obtained from the incubator will assist neighbouring farmers and
villages.
District development manager, NABARD Kohima, Chitubeni
Krocha, requested the farmers to develop the poultry project into an
entrepreneurship programme that would lead to success. She urged women farmers
to multiply the chicks for meat and egg production, nutritional security, and
for selling in the local market to generate additional income.
The chief guest of the programme, Dr. Abemo, registrar of
Nagaland University, urged the participants to work hard to make the programme
more meaningful in the future. He also encouraged them to utilise the
incubators for producing quality chicks on their farms.
He also stressed the importance of the horizontal spread of
the technology to neighbouring villages. He lauded the efforts made by the KVK
to promote sustainable poultry farming in the five villages.
He requested NABARD Dimapur to organise more programmes in
the future to improve the socio-economic conditions of the farmers in
collaboration with KVK, Zunheboto.
A total of five incubators were distributed among farmers
from five villages.
