
DIMAPUR — Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Kohima, organised a series of vital programmes, both on-campus and off-campus, for tribal farmwomen, rural youth, farmers’ produce organisations (FPOs) and self help groups (SHGs), which commenced on August 8.
The programmes, conducted with the aim to impart proper training to enhance the necessary skills and knowledge of the local farmers, concluded on August 17, stated a press release from KVK Kohima.
As a part of the 100 Days Action Plan of KVK, a comprehensive capacity building through skill development and vocational training programmes, both theory and practical demonstration with a range of insightful session, farmer-scientist interaction and method demonstration were held.
The training programmes were led by Dr. Martina Shitiri, ACTO (genetics and plant breeding), Puchono Kweho, SMS (agronomy), Dr. Shisarenla Aier, SMS (horticulture), Eliseni Tsopoe, SMS (plant protection), Imtinuksung, SMS (soil conservation) and Dr. Paihem Michui, ACTO (animal science).
Preservation technology of seasonal fruits and vegetables, seed production and pig production were imparted during the session to promote agri- entrepreneurship through farmers’ produce organisations (FPOs) and self help groups (SHGs).
The main objective was to make the FPOs and SHGs aware about the advantages and positive impact of FPOs and SHGs in entrepreneurship development.
‘Entrepreneurship development in agriculture and livestock sector’ was the key topic for vocational training where entrepreneurship in seed production, storage and management of seeds, demonstration on seed extraction and germination test, agri-tourism, vegetable and mushroom productions, soil health management in orchard and livestock production management, were explored to encourage the local youth for self employment and entrepreneurship development.
The event commenced with a welcome address by Dr. Ruokuovilie Mezhatsu, principal scientist and head of KVK Kohima, who highlighted the importance of hands-on training and stressed the need to implement training knowledge in practical field for socio economic development.
Altogether, 183 beneficiaries from Kigwema, Nerhe Pezha, Seiyhama, Sendenyu, Ziphenyu, Tesophenyu New and Tesophenyu villages were benefited. Critical inputs like vegetable seeds, Vencobb 430Y chicks, vitamins and mineral supplements were distributed under the 100 Days Action Plan of KVKs, the release added.
