DIMAPUR — The ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Dimapur, observed World Food Day 2026 at Dhansiripar village, Chümoukedima district, on Friday on the theme “Innovate Today, Nourish Tomorrow”, focusing on household nutritional security through kitchen gardening and improved post-harvest management practices.
A total of 25 participants attended the programme, which aimed to promote household-level vegetable production, improve family nutrition and strengthen food security through locally grown fresh produce, according to an update.
Dr. Chingakham Sima Chanu, Subject Matter Specialist (Home Science), KVK Dimapur, conducted an awareness programme highlighting the importance of kitchen gardens in ensuring access to fresh, nutritious and diverse food for household consumption. She emphasised that growing vegetables at home can improve dietary diversity, encourage healthy eating habits and reduce dependence on market-purchased vegetables.
Participants were encouraged to utilise available spaces around their homes to cultivate seasonal vegetables using locally available resources and sustainable gardening practices.
The programme also focused on reducing post-harvest losses of vegetables and other crops grown in home gardens.
Participants were sensitised to proper harvesting, sorting, cleaning, handling, storage and timely utilisation of produce to minimise spoilage and preserve the quality and nutritional value of harvested crops.
