KVK Dimapur conducts Khet Bachao Abhiyan in Nihokhu to promote sustainable farming and soil health management.

DIMAPUR — Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Dimapur, conducted a Khet Bachao Abhiyan at Nihokhu village in Niuland district on Friday, with the objective of creating awareness among farmers about sustainable agricultural practices, soil health management and eco-friendly pest control measures.
A total of 51 farmers participated in the programme, which was attended by Abeto Swu, chairman, along with members of the village council, an update from KVK Dimapur stated.
As part of the programme, a practical demonstration on soil organic carbon testing was conducted to familiarise farmers with its importance as a key indicator of soil health and fertility.
Participants were sensitised to the role of organic carbon in improving soil structure, enhancing water-holding capacity, supporting beneficial soil microorganisms and maintaining long-term soil productivity.
The demonstration also highlighted practices such as the application of organic manures, composting, crop residue recycling and the incorporation of green manure crops to improve and maintain soil organic carbon levels.
Another demonstration on the use of yellow sticky traps was conducted to educate farmers on the identification, monitoring and management of insect pests in agricultural and horticultural crops.
Participants were informed that the traps attract and capture flying insect pests, particularly aphids, whiteflies, leafhoppers and other sap-feeding insects.
The demonstration highlighted the importance of installing traps at appropriate crop canopy levels and monitoring them regularly for early detection of pest incidence.
Their use was promoted as an eco-friendly component of Integrated Pest Management (IPM), helping reduce unnecessary pesticide applications and minimise environmental risks.
The programme was conducted by Dr. Chingakham Sima Chanu, SMS (Home Science), and Dr. Moanaro, Technical Officer, KVK Dimapur.
They interacted with participants and emphasised the need to adopt scientific and sustainable farming practices, exercise judicious use of agricultural inputs and promote non-chemical pest management methods to improve crop productivity while conserving natural resources.
