DIMAPUR — The
Konyak Union Myanmar (KUM), an apex body of the Konyak Nagas living in Myanmar,
has sought the intervention of Nagaland lone Lok Sabha Member of Parliament , S
Supongmeren Jamir, to address their grievances.
In a memorandum, KUM has urged the MP to reach out to the
central government by raising the voice of innocent people living beyond the
international border and intercede for suspension of Free Movement Regime (FMR),
border fencing and border documents.
It stated that the Konyak Nagas have existed for centuries
in a land which was inherited from their forefathers before the formation of
any organisation.
It reminded that in 1968, the government notified free movement
of 40 km, which was reduced to 16 km in 2004 and subsequently to 10 km on
January 17, 2025. It stated that free movement regime requiring border pass
documents within their own land cannot be accepted.
It added that innocent people should be made to move freely
in the border areas as the land was inherited from their ancestor. Besides, it
stated that people from beyond the border depended on Mon town, which is the
nearest town, for their daily needs.
“We don’t need any documents to visit our own relatives on
either side of the border village. How can we carry the time limit documents
for going to one’s own fields and to cultivate one’s own land?” it questioned.
In light of the above stated circumstances, KUM has urged
the Lok Sabha MP from Nagaland to reach out to the central government in
voicing out their grievances.
