DIMAPUR, AUGUST 7
THE 12-hour Wokha district bandh called by the Kyong Students’ Union passed off peacefully today. The union called the bandh to express its resentment to the State government for
‘non-compliance’ with its ultimatum on oil exploitation/exploration in Wokha district.
According to a joint release issued by Kyong Students Union president Amos Odyuo and Lotha Youth Hoho president Phyochamo Ngullie, the union deployed its volunteers in all the strategic points. The bandh was total with all the shops downing shutters and the town wearing a deserted look as though the public was extremely happy to have a day break from all the hustles and bustles of the daily routine, the release said.
Apart from student volunteers, Lotha Youth Hoho volunteers from various colonies also gathered at Tsumang Point from 6 am till 6 pm to help KSU enforce the bandh. There was very thin attendance in offices while police were seen patrolling various parts of the town to thwart any untoward incident.
The Kyong Students’ Union and the Lotha Youth Hoho officials visited all the strategic points in the district and found all sections of the society cooperating with the bandh in spite of opposition from a few members of the LLRPO. They expressed gratitude to all concerned for cooperating in making the bandh a success.
The unions unanimously resolved that the next phase of agitation will be total ‘non-cooperation’ by the Lothas to the forthcoming Independence Day celebration in Wokha, the release said.
Meanwhile, the union has directed the various Lotha organizations or individuals to refrain from issuing any press statement with regard to the stand of the Kyong Students’ Union, failing which it will initiate its own course of action for which individual or organization concerned will be responsible.
