AFTER a marathon consultative meeting at DBS Youth Resource Centre, Wokha on Friday, the Kyong Students’ Union while reiterating its earlier stand decided not to allow oil & gas exploration in the land of Lothas till the demands as submitted to the chairman, Nagaland Petroleum & Natural Gas Board, on September 17, 2012 are met. This was stated in a release issued by Kyong Students’ Union president Amos Odyou and general secretary T Phyobemo Kikon.
Adopting a six-point resolution, the meeting condemned violent police action against peaceful and democratic student protesters during the forceful launching of oil exploration by MOGPL and also condemned the forceful launching of oil exploration at Tssori-Chanpang on July 21, 2014.
“Understanding that any form of alienation from our land and its resources would be disastrous for survival as a people, the House hereby resolved to defend and fight for our land and resources as our inalienable right,” the release said.
The meeting also condemned and rejected the signatories of the memorandum of agreement (MoA) signed on June 26, 2014 between ‘so-called’ Land Owners of Wokha Zone and Metropolitan Oil and Gas Pvt Ltd. (MOGPL), saying there is no such body as Land Owners of Wokha Zone.
The release said these resolutions were passed with full trust and faith of the Lotha people and added that therefore, any organisation or individual who goes against these resolutions will be considered as working against the interest of the Lothas.
Further, the House unanimously resolved to empower KSU to uphold, protect and defend these resolutions with dignity and honour.
The meeting was attended by Wokha District Village Council Chairmen Association, Wokha District VDBs Association, Kyong Eloe Hoho, Lotha Youth Hoho, Wokha District Senior Citizens’ Forum, Kohima Lotha Hoho, Chumukedima Lotha Hoho, Ralan Area Lotha Hoho, Lotha Lower Range Village Chairmen Association, Wokha Town Colony Union, Wokha District Chamber of Commerce & Industries, Wokha Town Colony Youth Organisation, senior student leaders and intellectuals.
