DIMAPUR — The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Phek, conducted a 5-day vocational training on soil health management under natural farming systems for youths from August 29 and September 1 to the 4th at KVK Phek, Porba.
The programme aimed to enhance participants’ knowledge and skills in sustainable soil fertility management, organic nutrient application, and eco-friendly crop production, stated a press release.
The inaugural sessions highlighted kiwi production by Manjunath KS, subject matter specialist (SMS)-Horticulture, and livestock waste management through composting and biosecurity measures by Dr. Harini KR, SMS-Animal Science.

Dr. T Esther Longkumer, chief technical officer (Soil Science), emphasised the role of natural farming in improving soil health, reducing chemical dependency, and enhancing farmers’ income. Swuyievezo Dzudo, IARI Innovative Farmer Awardee 2025, also motivated his fellow participants by sharing his experiences.
During the training, participants received hands-on guidance in compost preparation, bio-input application, crop residue management, and straw mulching for moisture conservation and weed control.
Practical demonstrations on composting, beejamruta and jeevamruta, along with film shows, exhibitions, and on-field exercises, enabled participants to gain practical knowledge of hill-friendly natural farming techniques.
The programme concluded with the distribution of inputs and certificates, inspiring participants to adopt sustainable and cost-effective farming practices in their own fields.
