A local tribal organization in Nagaland is reaching out to two families in Assam, whose relatives were victims of a recent crime committed in Mon district of Nagaland.
The Konyak Union (KU) of Nagaland has extended a humanitarian appeal in the form of financial assistance to the families of two persons, Khirod Gogoi and Rupam Gogoi, who were kidnapped, and subsequently killed in Nagaland by three car-lifting criminals. The remains of the two persons were found on May 25 in Tiru under Mon district.
Reaching out to the families, president of the union, Aiching Konyak and Secretary Ameth Konyak, visited and donated a sum of Rs 40,000 each to the bereaved families of driver Khirud Gogoi and his cousin Rupam Gogoi. This was informed by Manju Borah, a social activist in a letter received here on June 9, Monday.The leaders from Konyak Union said during a meeting with the families that the main accused, one Lukmung Konyak, was not a Naga by birth but adopted from the tea community.
In a related matter, Konyak village held a meeting recently and set to fire the house of the culprit and drove away his family from the village.
Expressing condolences to the bereaved families, the Konyak leaders are said to have told them that the ‘Assamese and the Nagas have been maintaining a deep bond since time immemorial. The culprits as such have been trying to divide our age long relationship. We are to beat these division-makers’.
They also referred to the history of Ahom king Gadhadhar Singha and Dalimi. In the presence of two gaonburhas (village heads) from Bagariguri, the Konyak leaders offered the financial aid and assured them that the union will take the matter to the Government of Nagaland calling for compensation to the affected families.
Both the Konyak community and the authorities in Nagaland have been expressing serious concern at the incident right from the time the victims were found missing.
