Dimapur, September 9 : Following a recent resolution that was adopted during an emergency meeting, the Konyak Union has decided to offer “support for the emancipation of the women folks / women reservation based on gradual observation and perseverance amongst the Naga society” but with a suggestion to put the quota at 25 %.
The resolution was taken during a September 9 meeting in Mon town in which the Konyak Union units, advisory board members and prominent leaders from Naginimora, Tizit, Mon, Aboi, and Tobu attended, the union stated in a press release to the media on the 9th.
“Warmly welcoming” the declaration of the Nagaland government to conduct t6he municipal and town council elections in the state, the union stated that it “fully endorsed its supports to the state government for conducting the election for municipal and town council as proposed or declared so as to foster on in developing those long neglected and deprived urban towns in the state.”
Nonetheless, the press release stated that “in order to avoid confusion within our Naga society,” the Konyak Union was proposing 25% reservation for women ‘in the nomination that guarantees equal voting rights and status as empowered to those elected members.’
The Konyak Union also appealed to political parties to “immediately set up eligible women candidates for the upcoming municipal and town council election whereby empowering the women folks with equal political rights, status and dignity.”
The organization also appealed to the ENPO, the Naga Hoho, the ENWO, the NMA and other Naga tribal organisation and leaders to “resort by 25% reservation for women in the nominee with empowered voting rights.”
The union explained that a “a gradual and careful beginning will definitely felicitate in delivering positive outcome. Hence, such motives and understanding amongst the Naga civil society will deliver long awaited justice for our Naga women folks.”
The statement observed that ‘sudden and immediate change in the system would rather lead us into total state of chaos and confusion, hence, in order to avoid such confusion, Naga society needs to uphold utmost perseverance based on gradual observation while allocating and empowering our women folks with rights and responsibility.’ “Our dream vision can be only be achieved when in the process for empowering the women folks, our political will should truly reflect the real taste of humanity,” it added.
