Konyak Union urges urgent government intervention as relentless rains and landslides continue to cripple road connectivity across Mon district

DIMAPUR — The Konyak Union (KU) has appealed to Nagaland government to immediately deploy additional heavy machinery, technical manpower and other resources to Mon district, warning that relentless monsoon rains and recurring landslides continue to cripple road connectivity despite ongoing restoration efforts by civil society organisations.
In a representation addressed to the minister for Planning & Transformation and National Highways, the union stated that the district has been battered by incessant rainfall since July 19, triggering widespread landslides, mudslides and flash floods that have caused extensive damage to road infrastructure.
According to the KU, the destruction has disrupted connectivity at several locations, leaving many villages inaccessible and severely affecting the transportation of essential commodities, healthcare services, emergency response and the daily lives of residents.
It stated that Konyak civil society organisations have been working round the clock to restore road connectivity despite the difficult conditions. It added that the CSOs have mobilised 11 JCB excavators, one Poclain excavator and 10 dumpers, while volunteers have joined hands with the district administration in clearing landslides and reopening roads.

However, the KU said, persistent rainfall continues to trigger fresh landslides, repeatedly undoing restoration work and stretching the limited resources available on the ground.
Describing the situation as critical, the union urged all departments concerned and agencies to accord the damaged road stretches the highest priority and immediately deploy additional machinery and technical personnel to accelerate restoration.
“Your timely intervention and support will greatly alleviate the suffering and help prevent further risks arising from the continuing adverse weather conditions," the representation stated.
