DIMAPUR — The Konyak Union has written to the chief secretary raising concern over what it described as “unwarranted harassment” of travellers from Mon district by the Assam Police along highways in Assam.
In a letter dated July 11, the organisation alleged that the Assam Police have “consistently subjected innocent travellers, including students, medical patients, and business persons, to intrusively questioning, indiscriminate checks in some cases, and acts bordering on intimidation” while travelling through the neighbouring state.
It said these recurring incidents have caused significant inconvenience and psychological distress to travellers who rely on these routes for access to healthcare, education, employment, and other essential needs.

The union stated that such actions amount to a breach of fundamental rights, particularly the right to free movement and dignity, and violate the ethos of inter-state harmony.
It urged the Nagaland government to take up the matter with the Assam authorities to ensure that such “arbitrary and unjustified actions are brought to an immediate halt.” It also proposed the setting up of a 24x7 grievance redressal helpline to assist and protect Mon-bound travellers facing such difficulties.
Expressing confidence in the state government, the KU appealed for prompt action to safeguard the rights and well-being of the people of Mon.
